Brainstorming session : what are possible future uses for Kirby’s Mill?
Historically, Kirby used the mill to generate power from the water wheel. It was his workshop and a fishing platform. The Girl Scouts turned the mill into a craft studio and a landmark hiking destination, then a G.S. history museum. The mill basement became a storage shed.
In discussion of future uses, an unofficial comment from an RJRD board member suggested the mill become a museum/ classroom.
Previous online FoCH brainstorming ideas : birding observation post & rentable space for overnights.
This brainstorming session took place at the campfire FoCH meeting at the Waterfront tent unit on October 13, 2015. I couldn’t always tell who was talking, and I didn’t want to interrupt the flow of ideas to ask names. So in this record, ideas are anonymous. If anyone wants to claim an idea as their own or to comment on something someone else said, go right ahead.
-It would be great to get the Millwheel going again.
-The vision can grow. Ten years ago Stan Hywet re-built their conservatory. Really beautiful now.
- Visitor Center for the park
-Drop in activity areas “honor stations” [ self-directed learning, doesn’t need staffed]
-Education place
-add a bird blind or deck on the other side of the bridge
-butterfly garden
- hands on
- EDUCATION!
- it’s not just for today, it’s to stand a hundred years into the future

More ideas: Kirby's old workshop can be a reading room If there has to be a volunteer on site when the wheel is operating, the workshop can be therir base of operation ( altho it's shouldn't be JUST that)
